The castle of Verboc: a Dardanian center of mining for iron extraction and processing
The Castle of Vërboc stands as one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Dardanians, reflecting the rich and diverse history of the Dardanian people in the Drenica region. The archaeological superficial traces, including gray-colored pottery, architectural remnants, and numerous relics of mining activities, offer vital evidence for understanding the mining and metallurgical processes of iron extraction and production that occurred in this area over various historical periods. Particularly noteworthy are the Middle Iron Age (8th–7th centuries BCE) and the early era of the Dardanian Kingdom (6th–3rd centuries BCE), which illuminate the early development of the Dardanian Kingdom's strength and the strategic and economic prominence of Vërboc, extending through the imperial and medieval periods.
