The linguistic interests of the polymath Peter Prifti (1924-2010)
The paper explores the linguistic interests of Peter Prifti (1924-2010), presenting them as an important dimension of his intellectual profile. Although he is better known for his writings on Albanian history, culture, and politics, Prifti also showed a strong and lasting commitment to the Albanian language. The paper therefore brings to light a less discussed aspect of his legacy. Particular attention is given in this paper to his contribution to the teaching of Albanian in the United States. Even if he was not a linguist in the narrow technical sense, he made a substantial contribution to the recognition and transmission of Albanian. His work helped preserve the language among Albanian communities in the United States. At the same time, it introduced Albanian to non-Albanian learners and scholars. Prifti became involved in projects aimed at preparing instructional materials for English-speaking learners of Albanian. In this context, he contributed to three important works: Spoken Albanian (1980), Standard Albanian: A Reference Grammar for Students (1982), and Readings in Albanian (1979). These publications are presented as major tools for the teaching and diffusion of Albanian abroad. The paper underlines Prifti's role not only as co-author, translator, and editor, but also as a promoter of accurate and high-quality language instruction. It also stresses his support for Standard Albanian and his conscious defense of its use in pedagogical and scholarly contexts. Another important point is his effort to strengthen Albanian studies institutionally in American academic life. The author shows that Prifti viewed language teaching, textbooks, dictionaries, and scholarly publications as essential parts of the history of Albanian in America. For Prifti, Albanian was not only a means of communication, but also a key element of national identity and cultural continuity.
